"John has helped me develop from a 3 chord strummer in the study to playing in bands in front of 100s of people. John has a brilliant ear for picking the essence of a lead break, a fill, the second guitar part and a great teaching style. His talent is only exceeded by his tolerance of the occasional strange tune from left field that he helps me with." - Leo
"John provides a framework for students to embark on their journey in music - his helpful and encouraging nature helps keep lessons positive as well as keeping progress on track." - Chris
"Our 14 year old daughter has had both bass and acoustic lessons with John for 5 years now, and the improvement has been amazing. He's helped her develop a life-long passion for music, both playing and recording. John has an all-round knowledge not only of the guitar and music theory, but also the technology used these days for recording and mixing. His easy going style helps his students feel comfortable, no matter what their level of playing." - Tara
"Eamon prefers bass lessons with John to actually playing in the school band. There's a perfect balance of what he needs to know, and what he likes to play." - Kim
"John has been providing lessons to my son for the last few years. He always treats my son with respect and teaches with great encouragement. John has such enthusiasm for guitar and music in general that I would have no hesitation in recommending him to others." - Jenny
"John is an excellent guitar tutor. He has a relaxed and easy going style but still manages to push you to improve. I would recommend him for adults and kids alike." - Gordon

I normally start students at age 6-7 years using a method book series called ‘Guitar For Young Beginners” this teaches them to read the Treble Clef and some basic chords for strumming.
I would suggest a nylon or ‘classical’ guitar as the nylon strings are easier on your fingers then after your fingertips get callouses you can progress to a steel string.
Any style you like! Either, Rock, Blues, Classical, Fingerstyle ‘Folk’, Country or a Method book.
